Description:
Accompanying the knitted purse is a typed letter: On the side where the American flag is represented the secret opening exists; about the centre of the red band. By taking of the bag between finger and thumb of each hand, at the red band, and pulling slightly in opposite directions, the opening will be discovered in the centre of the red band. The bag is closed by pulling the top draw string: [a hand drawn illustration is inserted in the the text here] with one hand, and pressing the thumb of the other hand on that part of the red band above the opening; the neat closing of it is soon made where the knack of catching up the parts in acquired.
[It continues] My dear Mrs. Banks,
I suspect that these directions, and those on the bag, will afford Miss Estella some amusement, and she may have some opinion that I intend to be a humorist. May I, please, leave such imputation to your good self in the office of defender? All the same, please remember me very kindly to that merry lady and assure her that my aspirations are not in such direction -- that is, if she thinks there is an indication that way.
Sincerely always,
Thomas Gibbons.
There are three other strips of typed instructions stating: To close bag, place one thumb on here, with a little pressure, [continuing in handwriting] and pull on this draw string. To open bag, pinch hold here and pull to the right. To open bag, pinch hold here and pull to the left.
