Description:
Hand-coloured etching in two panels by Isaac Robert Cruikshank (I.R.C. fecit). The subject is Rev. Charles Wicksted Ethelston, a clerical magistrate who read the Riot Act to the meeting at Peterloo, Manchester. In the first panel, Ethelston stands holding a large bible and paper with: 'The form of ordination for a priest'. His words printed above: 'Take heed lest ye meet with wolves in sheeps cloathing. Mind what I say not what I do!! -- Yorkshire parson -- mark those who cause contentions among you, and avoid them.'. In the second panel, Ethelston is shown dressed as a magistrate, seated, holding up a sword and scourges. He also holds papers inscribed in large letters: 'Riot Act'; 'Command signatures to loyal address &c &c &c'; 'Orders to Tory yeomanry' and 'Sidmouths Circular'. More papers regarding sports and betting are piled on an adjacent table. His feet are on many more papers with e.g: 'Mercy'; 'Humility'; 'Forbearance'; 'Love''. His words printed above: 'Why is it that whenever a Riot Act is read to a peaceful meeting; whenever a political prosecution is to be caried on, whenever a hawker is to be held to bail, not under the law, but under Lord Sidmouths Circular, we find the name of a Clerical Magistrate concerned?'
