Twentieth-century manuscript note in red ink on blank page: In this book belonging to Gerard Meynell / the "Old Stye" initials were done at his / request by me, but as a Christmas pre- / sent, 1920 but not being finished / in time they were to have been presented / Christmas 1921. The book was, / however, laid by for me to learn suf- / ficient latin inoffensively to add:- / [two rows of crosses] - to avoid a / further indefinite delay, now said / in asterisk. This to him with / Xmas Greetings from me E. J. / "Mense Decembri" / mcmxxvj.
