Full goatskin over wooden boards with grooved edges; multiple fillets and tooling to form a border; central cartouche with the arms of Henry II; four fleur-de-lis, three interlaced crescents and monogram: intertwined initials H and D; on the upper board the cartouche and arms are gilt with gilt lettering: ΟΠΠΙΑΝΟΣ A.; both boards show remains of [silver or white?] decoration; both upper and lower boards have four holes which previously held protective pins or bosses; the upper board-edges have holes for pins onto which ties or clasps would catch.
