Description:
Summer 1904 edition of Yggdrasill magazine; created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated Summer term cover is the magazine title framed in a partial border of stylised foliation and flowers. The cover has been coloured with watercolour paint. The Editorial notes begin on the verso of folio one, opening with congratulations on the 'group' which is the 'best that has yet been taken'. (A reference perhaps to the annual photograph of current students; usually found as the frontispiece, which unfortunately, is missing from the magazine). There is once again a complaint of slackness in contributions to the magazine by the readers. The articles begin on folio two with the regular general update 'Chronicle'. This is followed on folio three by a tipped in poem 'A Holiday'; the poem has been illustrated with tiny pen and ink drawings and signed 'C.L.C. 8 July 1904'. Next comes an essay on the verso of folio three 'Old Girton days' covering the history of Girton College, Cambridge. Then follows a poem on folio five 'Ashburne House Before the Midsummer Exams'. The short fiction 'A Sketch' is directly after on folio six. On folio eight is a report on 'The O. A. A. Meeting' by an old Ashburnian, followed by a short piece entitled 'Who in the Dickens are You?' on the verso of the same folio. On the verso of folio nine is an acrostic poem 'To Ashburne House' which is illustrated by a tipped in watercolour of the drive leading up to Ashburne House. Opposite this on folio ten is 'A piece of patchwork' a short piece assembled with lines taken from various plays by Shakespeare. The next contribution is a short story 'The Eastern King' which runs to the verso of folio twelve. Directly following this is a list of the students in residence at the House for the session 1903-4, distinctions and prizes attained by various Ashburnians and Examination results for the session.
