Description:
Lent 1902 edition of Yggdrasill magazine, created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated cover is a pencil and ink drawing depicting cherubic angels. One angel wears a cap and the other a gown. Opposite the first page are four photographs. On the first page there is a table of contents and the Editorial notes. The editorial explains that there has been much illness over the winter which has depleted both contributors and staff, including the warden Miss Stephens who is temporarily retired. The photographs are listed as the first Secretaries and Treasurers of the Hall, Miss Cooke, Professor Samuel Alexander, Mr Haworth and Mrs Weiss. Contributions to the magazine from Miss Wilson the deputy-warden and Miss Dorothea Stephen, the sub-deputy-warden are noted. The notes also inform the readers of the comings and goings of the various members of the magazine committee and House. The articles begin on page five with the contribution of Miss Wilson 'Some Early Memories of Newnham', followed on page eleven by a pasted in drawing and a poem 'The Asshebuhrnhéans'. Underneath the poem is the solution to the acrostic set in the previous edition of the magazine. On page thirteen begins 'A Town on Fire' by Miss Dorothea Stephen. A song 'Rude Boreas' is next on page eighteen, submitted by 'Wildfire'. An unsigned article on Henry Vaughan comes after this on page twenty. On page twenty-four is another poem 'The Upper Brook Street Tram', again, unsigned. There follows an article on 'The poems of Kipling' on page twenty-six, signed C.L. Corbett. Page twenty-seven is the sports update 'Athletic Notes' and page twenty-nine the 'College Jubilee' an interpretation of 'Macbeth'. On page thirty-one is the short story 'The Village Concert'. The edition closes with 'An Ashburnians peace-offering to the Editor' (signed Dormouse) and the 'Ist No. of Yggdrasill' both on page thirty-five. The Editorial is on page thirty-six. The rules for submission are reiterated and it informs the House that the next edition is to be issued at the end of Summer Term 1902. The Officers are listed; Editor: E. Parker, Sub-Editor: J. Williamson, Secretary & Treasurer: M. Phillips. The Committee are listed as E. Parker, J. Williamson, M. Phillips, M. Haweridge and S. Ashworth.
