Description:
|
Single line engraving in black ink. Job is here placed within a mysterious chamber adorned with sculpted reliefs depicting a number of scenes of his own terrible trial. With his arms outstretched in the crucifix position and a finger indicating a separate trial each, his body language implies that each one was overcome with the help of his faith. As Job stands before his terrible experiences as a personification of Christian faith, he suggests the Holy Cross stands before everything in life, good or bad. The fact that he is now back within the loving embrace of three of his daughters, and the entire illustration is supported by an organic network of flowering vines and musical instruments, suggests that once again everything is harmonious.
