Description:
|
Single line engraving in black ink. After the intensity of the preceding image here Job is shown despondent and unresponsive with fatigue. His tired gaze is focused on the presence of some masonry that has edged into the peripheries of this scene. Both objects frame Job and take the form of a rudimentary crucifix. This gradually emerging symbol is prophetic of the role of faith in Job's experiences he is faced by three figures who lament his troubles and seek to comfort him, but his averted gaze tells of his discovered solace in the contemplation of the cross. The form of the sheltering crucifixes is also in stark contrast to the landscape setting, which now teems with the coarse stone structures synonymous with druidic cults. Between Job and his comforters these objects squat, inhabiting the shadowed hill and avoiding the emerging light.
