Description:
|
Single line engraving in black ink. An earthly, idealised, haloed Satan literally oppresses Job with his own physical presence. He stands atop of a contorted and agonised depiction of Job, who is rigid with pain and fear. Satan summons forth lightning bolts and again his hand grips a vial which either fuels Job's suffering or feeds off of it. The setting sun in the horizon indicates a faith in degeneration. It is a world that fades to darkness, made all the more poignant by the feeble light that throws the figure of Job's wife, harassed with anguish, into a ragged chiaroscuro. The dense fog that smothers the natural atmosphere extends beyond the real world and swirls into the border space connecting Job's world of terror to the anarchic space of faceless winged demons and motifs of plague and decay.
