Description:
|
Single line engraving in black ink. Here is a scene that is immediately comparable to 'Satan Before the Throne of God' compositionally, but now the distinction between Job's real world and the heavenly vision that existed in the third plate is less defined. The top half of the scene appears to exist in and even be nourished by Job's nightmarish existence. All religious symbols are extinguished and replaced by the solemn druidic stone structures that hold connotations of sacrificial rituals. Job appears giving alms to an emaciated beggar that is strikingly similar in appearance to him. Their interaction is hollow and represents the long road Job must travel before his faith is restored.
