Description:
|
Single line engraving in black ink. Blake has here depicted Satan perched atop a pile of rubble and human bodies before a backdrop of intense flames and a fractured sky. Satan has transformed from the idealised male to the winged personification of evil. He squats unnaturally and his outstretched arms are the source of the entire vision of torment, his body is physically intertwined with his desolate environment. The writhing mass of bodies beneath Satan is a living manifestation of the lightening and flames behind them essentially they personify Satan's destruction. One notable figure is the form of Job's son lying in an inverted crucifix position, symbolising the overturning of Job's faith through this act. The border adds to the terrible drama containing the etchings of scorpion tails, flames and smoke.
