Description:

Armorial bookplate of Stanesby Alchorne (1727-1800), Master of the Mint, on rear pastedown: 'Stanesby Alchorne, Tower of London'. Alchorne's library was purchased by the bookseller Thomas Payne, offered to Lord Spencer in 1806 for £1200, declined by him and sold to Thomas Johnes (1748-1816) of Hafod. In February 1813, Johnes offered the Alchorne books to Lord Spencer who bought them for £3500.
