Description:
|
South westerly view of the Cathedral, Manchester. Showing the front elevation of the church with its distinctive clock tower. The cathedral is in the Perpendicular Gothic style, but the medieval church was extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period. There has been a church on the site of the Cathedral since 1215 and it was not until 1847 that the diocese of Manchester was created, resulting in the establishment of the Cathedral church. In 1868 the exterior of the Cathedral was renewed and a new tower, an exact replica but six feet higher than the previous one, was opened. The Cathedral was also extensively restored and extended following bomb damage in the 20th century.
