Description:
View of the Royal Exchange Manchester. Showing the grand Cross Street colonnade that Mills & Murgatroyd constructed between 1867 and 1874. Construction materials are visible on the steps of the colonnade and a slightly blurry a horse drawn cab can be seen on the street. In 1921 the building was modified again to give it the Edwardian exterior recognisable today. The Exchange building was devastated during World War II, when it took a direct hit from a bomb in 1940 and again in 1996 when an IRA bomb exploded in Corporation Street less than 50 yards away.
