Description:
|
Interior view of the Cathedral nave, Manchester. Looking towards the highly ornate woodwork screen and organ. The nave is a grand space with numerous arcades supported by columns and an ornately carved roof. In 1872 the main arcades of the nave were taken down and rebuilt in new stone, accurately copying the old. The organ seen in the print was badly damaged when a bomb exploded on the north east side of the Cathedral in 1940, and stop-gap measures were taken to repair the instrument, re-using old pipework. This organ lasted 75 years, but was finally replaced in 2016.
