Description:
Interior view of the fireplace in the refreshment room on the first floor of the Lyric Theatre, London. The fireplace is extremely elaborate and massive in size. There is a marble surround to the actual grate as well as decorative tiling. The mantelpiece itself is substantial, with both strapwork and scrollwork incorporated into the decorative design. The overmantel that extends up to the ceiling has a mirror set in the centre and panels with decorative putti (cherubs) on either side. These panels also house lighting fixtures with lightbulbs visible. Inset at each side of the fireplace is a radiator. The room is partially panelled; the panelling also has carved scrollwork friezes which complements the design of the fireplace. On the left of the fireplace is a thermometer mounted on the wall. The Lyric Theatre was designed by the architect C J Phipps for the producer Henry Leslie in 1888 and is still in use today, the theatre was Grade II listed by English Heritage in September 1960.
