Description:
Interior view of the grand staircase at the Hotel Cecil, London, seen from the half landing. The grand staircase has a carved marble balustrade in Renaissance revival style. Neo Classical columns and arches both feature in the architecture and ornate carved friezes adorn the walls. The friezes are decorated with foliage and classical figures. The elaborate ceiling is a coffered or lacunar moulded ceiling; a series of decorated sunken panels. The Hotel Cecil was erected between 1890 and 1896 to the designs of architects Perry & Reed and was the largest in Europe when opened. The photograph was taken for interior designers S. J. Waring & Sons. The hotel was requisitioned for the war effort in 1917 and the very first headquarters of the newly formed RAF took up part of the hotel from 1918 to 1919. The Cecil was largely demolished in autumn 1930 and Shell Mex House was built on the site, however the Strand facade of the hotel still remains.
