Description:
Interior view of the dining room in St Fagans Castle, Cardiff, showing oak panelling and a coat of arms above the fireplace. The room is partially panelled with a carved frieze running around the top of the panelling. There is a large floral patterned rug covering the wooden floor and a dining table with partially upholstered dining chairs around it. The room is dominated by the large fireplace which has a stone surround and an ornately carved overmantel. The overmantel incorporates Neo Classical columns and intricate strapwork into its design. The deeply carved arms of the Earl of Plymouth sit at the centre of the overmantel, giving a three dimensional effect to the crest. Under the crest is carved ‘stemmata quid faciunt’ (Of what value are pedigrees?). Numerous other chairs line the room and there is a deer head mounted on the wall above a door. St Fagans Castle (Welsh: Castell Sain Ffagan) is an Elizabethan mansion in St Fagans, Cardiff, Wales, dating from the late 16th century. A medieval castle dating from the 13th century previously existed on the site. The house and remaining medieval fortifications are Grade I listed. The property was owned by successive Lord Windsors, Earl of Plymouth until 1947 when the Windsor-Clives gave the house and grounds to the Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales and the grounds subsequently became the site of the Welsh Folk Museum, now St Fagans National Museum of History. There is some slight fading to the print.
