Description:
|
Interior view of the grand staircase at Overtoun, Dumbarton, seen from the half landing. The staircase has a magnificent cast-iron stair balustrade with an elaborate lion rampant entwined in thistle design as the repeating pattern. There are many unidentified paintings visible and an ornate light fitting hanging down into the hallway. The ceiling has decorative plasterwork. Overtoun House was built between 1859 and 1862 for James White, a wealthy Glasgow industrialist. The photograph was taken for his successor and only son, John Campbell White, Lord Overtoun. The interior decor was carried out by Gillow and Company. Overtoun was given to the people of Dumbarton in 1938 by the White family and has since been a hospital and most recently, a Christian Youth Centre. There are some flaws in the print itself, likely sustained in the printing process rather than a flaw to the original plate or negative.
