Description:
Interior view of the staircase at West Dean Park, West Sussex. The staircase has a carved strapwork balustrade and the finials that top the newel posts are decorated with carved leaves. There is wooden panelling in the hallway and partial wood panelling running up alongside the staircase; a very large painting (unidentified) hangs near to the top of the stairs. Just visible is an intricate plasterwork ceiling. The photograph was taken for William Dodge James, who acquired the house in 1892, to show work carried out by architects Ernest George and Harold Peto. The estate itself dates back to 1086 and the first manor house at West Dean was built in 1603. In 1738 James Wyatt built a house for Lord Selsey on the site of an older building, creating the core of the current mansion and this was greatly enlarged by the modifications made in 1893. Edward James who inherited the property was a British poet known for his patronage of the surrealist art movement. In 1964 he established the Edward James Foundation a charitable educational trust, to fulfil his desire to nurture music, traditional crafts and the visual arts. West Dean College was opened at the Park premises in 1971 as a centre for education and training in conservation and in the visual and applied arts. There is some slight fading to the print.
