Description:
Interior view of a morning room at The Albany, showing the fireplace, London. There is decorative plasterwork above the picture rail and just visible on the ceiling. Solid bookcases sit on either side of the door to the morning room. There is a writing desk and chair in view and two leather chairs positioned each side of the fireplace. The fireplace is neo-classical in design with an ornate overmantel that has decorative composite columns and an inlaid mirror. There is mosaic tile decoration on the fireplace insert. Many photographs are on display around the room. The image was taken for H Osborn O'Hagan, who was resident at 14A The Albany. The Bedford Lemere daybook lists the interior designer as C E Birch. The Albany or simply ‘Albany’ is an apartment complex in Piccadilly, London. Formerly Melbourne House it was converted to a prestigious set of bachelor apartments in 1802. The past residents have included such famous names as the poet Lord Byron. During the Second World War, one of the buildings received significant damage from a German bomb, but was reconstructed after the war to appear as an exact replica. Residents no longer have to be bachelors, although children under the age of 14 are not permitted to live there. There are some very small flaws in the print itself, likely sustained in the printing process rather than a flaw to the original plate or negative.
