Description:
Interior view in the boudoir at Rawdon House, looking towards the fireplace. The fireplace is carved stone with a pair of Jacobean terminal figures (human top half, columnar bottom) framing the fire. The mantel has a deeply carved decorative frieze of classical figures and animals. The wooden overmantel is similarly elaborate, with two classically styled figures. The room is fully panelled in wood with a chandelier hanging from the ceiling. There are various unidentified paintings and photographs. There is a savonarola style (cross frame) chair and other solid wooden Victorian furniture on display. Rawdon House originally dates from the mid-17th century, but was extended and restored by Ernest George and Peto in 1879. In 1898 it became St Monica's Priory, a convent of Augustinian canonesses, a use that lasted until 1969; it has since been converted for use as offices. According to the Bedford Lemere notes, the image was taken for H. K. Ricardo. There is some slight fading to the print.
