Description:
|
Interior view of the entrance hall at Nether Court. The hall has neo-classical design features mixed with other eclectic influences. There are two Ionic columns that frame the entrance; there is busy patterned wallpaper and a gong in the right corner. The wooden staircase has newel posts which have been carved to appear like bricks and the finial at the foot of the staircase is a carved animal (unidentifiable) bearing a shield. Nether Court was built in 1883 by architect Percy Stone for wealthy businessman Henry Tubbs, for whom the photograph was taken. Tubbs lived in Nether Court until his death in December 1917, after which it lay empty for several years despite two new owners. It was eventually purchased in 1929 by Finchley Golf Club. Tubbs had been long associated with the club and had allowed them to use the grounds for golf since 1892.
