Description:
|
Albumen print of Sandbach Crosses, Cheshire. Two large, carved stone crosses standing on a double plinth on the cobbled market square in Sandbach. Thought, from their iconography, to date back to the early 9th century and probably moved from their unknown original site to the market square in the 16th century. They are both missing their crosspiece. The one on the left is larger than the other. The decoration on the larger cross focuses on biblical subjects. The figures, animals and ornament on the smaller cross are most likely represent different aspects of the Christian community. To their left is a two-storey brick building, the bottom of which has a window shopfront with a painted sign above ‘…N.Y Johnstone London tea & Coffee De…’. A two-storey building is to their right with other buildings partially in view in the background.
