Description:
The interior of the Weaving Shed in the main UMIST building on Sackville Street. Taken from the northern end of the room the shot is angled directly south along the central aisle formed between the two banks of metal framed weaving machines that run the entire length of the shed. These are connected via drive belts to fly wheels on the ceiling which are placed along two drive shafts that were fixed above the machinery and transmitted the power to run them from the generators. The western wall has a series of large windows which looked out internally over the spinning room while on the eastern wall a line of framed pictures has been hung against the whitewashed brick work. The Weaving Shed was located on floor A along the eastern edge of the building. The glazed roof is made up of a series of peaked sections aligned east west. A small number ‘19’ has been printed in the bottom right corner of the picture and the number ‘23’ written in ink on the reverse.
