Description:
|
The interior of a carpentry workshop in the Manchester Mechanics building on Princess St (Formerly David St); Taken from one end of the chamber the shot is angled diagonally across three rows of wooden benches on which lathes have been mounted. Boys of varying ages can be seen working at these benches each wearing a white apron over shirts and waistcoats. The power to run the lathes was transmitted from the generators via drive shafts running along the ceiling of the room and then through the belts that can be seen descending to the benches. In the far corner of the workshop a large double doorway is visible and to the side of this are two older men that appear to be teachers or instructors and are watching over the progress of the class. The old Manchester mechanics building still stands on the corner of Princess Street and Major Street.
