Description:
The area surrounding the river Medlock as it ran parallel to Sackville Street. Taken from the roof of the main UMIST building the shot is angled south along Sackville Street towards St Luke’s street and shows the tall spire of St Luke’s church in the background (neither street nor church still exist). The Medlock is shown flowing openly in a roughly north/south course between various mills and factories all of which were shortly afterwards demolished to make way for the southern expansion of the UMIST campus. The river itself was soon to be culverted and now flows at this particular point beneath the Renold and paper sciences buildings. Also shown in the picture is the Sackville Street garage lying just south of the railway viaduct, which nowadays cuts the UMIST campus in two, along with the industrial buildings that at the time lined either side of Sackville street and further south of these the ranks of terraced housing that predominated in the area. All of this has since been cleared, the Sackville St buildings to make way for the Pariser, Papers sciences, Faraday and Weston buildings the rest to accommodate the Mancunian way which was constructed in 1967.
