The interior of a classroom in the main UMIST building on Sackville Street. Taken from the north western corner of the chamber, the shot is angled south east and shows four fixed rows of wooden desks and benches facing a single demonstration counter at the front of the room. Behind this fixed to the eastern wall is a blackboard hung above which are various charts and diagrams that continue round onto the upper section of the southern wall. These include lists on the expansions of metals and liquids a table of specific gravities, a diagram of a section of pipe and various other pieces of information relating to Chemistry and Engineering. In the south east corner there is an alcove in which there can be seen a wooden cupboard and a glass display cabinet next to which is the main door to the room which provided access from the corridors that ran through the northern and western wings of the building and intersected just outside the doorway. There is a further door in the southern wall which opened onto the lecture room beyond and placed above this is a boxed wall clock of a style similar to those found in many of the rooms in the building. The ceiling of the chamber is vaulted with three elaborate support beams angled to meet above the centre of the floor and to the west of this point there hangs a wrought iron chandelier. The room was located on floor F of the building in the north western corner. There is a small number ‘63’ printed in the bottom right corner of the image.
