Main lecture theatre, John Owens building
Description:
The interior of the main lecture theatre in the Owens building on Burlington Street (now administrative offices). Shot from the back of the raised benches looking towards the desk and blackboards at the front. The image shows a single unidentified figure setting equipment up on one end of the desk on which there are rows of bottles phials and test tubes. Behind this there is a large blackboard with formulae written on it in chalk. Along the southern side of the room can be seen two large arched windows with three further smaller windows above the blackboard covered with dark blinds. There is an open door to the south of the desk in the rear wall leading through to what appears to be a preparation room. On the northern wall is a large board, displaying the natural classification of the elements. Plaster portraits of John Dalton, Michael Faraday and others are hung on the wall around the circumference of the theatre.
