Description:
|
Letter from Martha Carolina Goldsworthy to Mary Hamilton. She writes to say that everyone is well and they have all arrived safely in Lucerne. Although she felt a little sick during the journey she feels he should be patient when these things occur as she feels perfectly fine now. She informs her that the King, Queen, Prince and princesses were all very well staying at Mr Nevil’s home. Generally they are leaving at a little before ten every morning and will only return after two o’clock in the afternoon. Colonel Hotham [Charles Hotham (1729-1794) retired to become Groom of the Bedchamber to George III, though continued to be involved in military affairs] and Goldsworthy herself are benefiting from being there and having a little freedom; taking a long stroll.
She then normally gets changed once she has returned and spends the rest of the day relaxing; visiting the chapel before going to have dinner with everyone in Mrs Hagedorn’s dining room. She informs her that Princess Elizabeth is as well-behaved, etc as one would expect a princess to be and she sends Hamilton her regards. She sends her warm regards from herself and those she is staying with and hopes she has not forgotten her. She would have written another letter to their mutual friends, but explains that the princesses have come out onto the terrace where she is writing and singing and talking amongst themselves.
Dated at Lucerne, [Switzerland].
