Description:
Vellum roll depicting a chronological history from the creation to 15th century France. It contains 65 painted medallions. The first column relates to the Christian Church in Rome and the line of popes to Pontain (listed as Alexander I, Sixtus I, Telesphorus, Hyginus, Anicetus, Pius I, Soter, Eleutherius, Victor I, Zephyrinus, Callistus I, Urban I and Pontain). The second column lists the line of Roman Emperors to Septimius Severus (Domitian, Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Anthoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus, Didius Julianus, and Septimius Severus). The third column begins with battles between the Franks and the Romans, and Duc Marcomir of the Franks renaming Gaul 'France' and Lutesse 'Paris'. It continues with the line of the first French kings (Pharamond, Chlodio, Merovech and Childeric). The fourth column gives an account of the early British kings under the Romans: Coel (Cole), Constantius and his wife, St Helena, Constantine I, the first Christian emperor, Conan Meriadoc, the first king of Brittany, Octavius, Maximianus, Constantine II, his son Constans (brother of Aurelius Ambrosius and Uther Pendragon), and Vortigern. The medallions depict events from the text, including the Crowning of Pharamond, the first king of France (45), and Conan Meriadoc becoming the first king of Brittany [Little Britain] (44).
