|
Fall of Princes. Book one: an illuminated initial 'A' introduces the tale of Canace and Macareus. Canace and her brother Macareus loved one another incestuously and as a result of their union Canace bore a child. Their father Eolus (Aeolus) found out about their love and sought to kill both his children. Macareus ran away and Eolus sent Canace a sword so that she could end her own life. Canace knows she must die and writes a final letter to Macareus; red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'O' introduce the letter. Canace writes that she knows she must endure death for love and she begs him not to forget her or their son. Small illuminated and coloured initials introduce the verses. The written space is 285 x 200 mm in two columns and the script is rather an ugly and unstable anglicana formata.

Ostensibly the work is an adaptation of Laurent de Premierfait's 1409 translation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 'De casibus vivorum illustrium', a collection of moralized tragedies, extending from Adam to King John of France, that were designed to illustrate Fortune's fickle nature and the downfalls brought on by sinful living and unjust government.
