The tale of how King Edgar sends a knight, Edelwold, to ascertain the truth about stories of the fairness of Estrilde, whom he wants to wed. How Edelwold deceives the King and marries Estrilde himself, and how when he confesses his trick to her, she loves him no more. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

Edwardes mooder and entered: he herde speke of þ(e) fairnes of Estrilde þat was Orgar(es) douȝt(er) a Baroun(~) of Deuenesshir(e) þat was so fayr a woman þat alle me(~) speken þ(er)of. he cal- lede on of his knyghtes þat he muche louede and triste vp on and tolde him. Go quod he to þe noble Barou(~) Orgare of Deuenesshire and se yf his doughter be so faire as men speken of and yf it be soth: y wele haue hire vnto my wyf // þis knyȝt þat me callede Edelwold wente forþ his way and come þere þ(t) þe lady þo was: and whanne he saugh hire so fair he þoughte haue hire him self to wyf and þ(er)of spak to Orgar hire fader // And Orgar was an old man and had no mo children but hire one. and saugh þat Edelwold was a fair ȝong knyght and worþy and riche and was wel w(t) þe kyng and þoughte his doughter shulde wel be maried & wel biset oppon him and g(ra)untede him his dought(er) ȝif þat good lord þe king wolde consente þ(er)to // þis Edelwolde come aȝen vnto þe king and tolde hy(~) þat she was fair ynough vppon to see. but of body she was wonder lothly // þo ansuerde þe king and sayde þat he took of hire litel charge // Sire quod Edelwold þo she is hire fadres heire and J am nought riche of landes and ȝif ȝe wolde con- sente & g(ra)unte þ(t) J. moste hire haue. þanne shulde J be riche y nough. Jn godes name quod þe king J consente þ(er) to. Edelwold þankede þo muche þe king and wende aȝene in to Deueneshire and spousede þ(e) damysele and in þat cuntre he duelled And þus it bifel vppon a tyme þat he tolde his counceil and al þis þing vnto his wyf how and in what man(er)e he had bigiled his lord þe king þat wolde haue had hire to wif: and anon as she it wiste: she louede him neu(er) more aftirward as she had don bifore // þis lady conceyuede by him a sone and whanne time was þat þe childe shulde be borne. Edelwold come to þe king and p(ra)ye- de him to heue a sone of his at þe fontstou(~).þe king him g(ra)unted and lete calle him Edgar aft(er) his owene name
