Description:
|
The tale of how Vortiger tries to build a castle in Wales, but it constantly falls before completion. He is advised to temper the mortar with the blood of a child. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial ' W ' introduce the tale of how Vortiger seeks Merlyn (Merlin). The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

tuene his men he delyu(er)ed Vortiger out of prisoun(~) and soffred him frely to gone whider þat he wolde and he nome his weye and went in to Walys þere þat his britouns duellede for as muche as þat londe was st(ro)ng and wikked to wynne . and En- gist neu(er)e com þere ne knew it neu(er) bifore þat lande // Vortiger helde him there wiþ his britouns and axede counceil what him was best al for to done and þey ȝaue him counceil to ma- ke a st(ro)ng castel þat he mighte him self þ(er)inne kepe and defen de if it nede were // Masouns in haste þo were fette and bigonne þe werk vppon þe hulle of Breigh but certes þus it bifell al þe werk þat þe masou(~)s made a day a doun(~) it fel a nyȝt and þat ferde so .iij. times or .iiij. Wher of þey hadden gret wonder what it mighte be : and þ(er) of þe king was sore annoyede of þat chaunce and wiste nouȝt what to done wherfore he lete sende after þe wiseste clerkes and also lewede men þat weren þorugh out Walys þat mighte be(~) founde for þey shulde telle wherfore þe foundeme(~)t so faillede vnder þe werk and þat þey shulde him telle what was best to done and whanne þe wiseste me(~) longe time hadde studied þey seide to þe king þat he shulde don seke a child born of a wy(~) man þat neu(er) had wiþ man to done and þat child he shulde sloen and te(~)p(er)e wiþ þe blood þe mort(er) of þe werk and so shulde þe werk eu(er)e endure wiþouten ende How þe king lete se- che Merlyn þorugh al Walys for to speke w(t) him Cap(o). lxj(o). Whanne þe king herde þis he comaunded his messag(er)s anon to wende þorugh out Walis to seke þ(t) childe ȝif þey mighte him fynde and þat þey shulde bring him forþ wiþ ham vn to him and in recorde and witnesse of þis þing he had take ham his l(ett)re þat þey ne were destour bled of no man ne lette // And so faste þo spedden þe messa gers þat þey come vnto a toun þat me callede Kermedyn and as þey passed forth here way . þey founden .ij. children of .xiiij. ȝer age chidden yfere hasty wordes and on of ham saide to þat oþ(er) // Donebat q(uod) he ȝe don al wronge to chide
