Description:
Book about the 'The Longdendale Chain', a project to supply Manchester and surrounding areas with water in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Longdendale Chain is a sequence of six reservoirs on the River Etherow in the Longdendale Valley, northern Derbyshire designed by Bateman and still in use today. At the time of construction the Longdendale Works were considered the largest in the country and also to be of considerable importance particularly to the student of Hydraulic Engineering, as well as of interest concerning local interest. The book was written over a course of 25 years and was produced in two sections. The first (historical) part was written between December 1858 and January 1959 and covers the history of the Waterworks up to 1848 (when actual construction began). The The Longdendale Chain was completed in 1877 and the second (descriptive part) which relates the main features, difficulties and peculiarities of the undertaking was written between 1878 and 1883. The book is dedicated to Sir Joseph Heron, Town Clerk of Manchester. It was presented to the Victoria University of Manchester (Engineering Department) by the author's son, Rev. William Fairbairn La Trobe-Bateman in June 1906. The volume contains 37 fold out maps which have been catalogued as speparate images.
